Ice and Fire- Þórsmörk

This is the place to see  how the forces of nature are shaping the landscape.  Thorsmork is a valley which is surrounded by three glaciers and volcanos.

A bus will depart from the University of Iceland´s Main building at 08:00 Satuday morning of  April 5th 2014.  We drive to Hvolsvöllur where we can buy lunch packet if someone has forgotten to bring some along.

By Seljarlandsfoss waterfall/Hamragardar we will board the 8x8 wheeler The Ice Explorer  that will cross unbridged glacial rivers on its way.  We will pass some of the remains of the VOLCANIC ERUPTION OF 2010.  At the glacial lagoon „Lónið“ we will see how the ice, water and mud forced its way  out of the glacier due to the flash floods generated by the volcano Eyjafjallajokull.  (1 hour hiking tour). The flood covered the entire valley and damaged roads and bridges.

We will continue further,  crossing rivers all the way to the end of the valley at Básar where we will have our lunch.

After lunch we will explore the gorge  Stakkholtsgjá which is another interesing natural phenomenon. (1 hour hiking tour).
